Publisher Gamecock Media Developer Red Fly Genre Action Adventure Online No Players 1 Release Feb 2009 Price £34.99
No pseudo-scary kids title, it’s got a fair bit of comedy and nice gameplay touches.
The thing that immediately
strikes you about Mushroom
Men is just how unnerving
it is. Now, we don’t really like
mushrooms, and seeing them
moving around like grubby, fungal
Borrowers is pretty unpleasant.
You’re unlikely to have a similar
experience, unless you have the
same kind of dislike of ’shrooms,
but it seems as if the developer
has gone all out to make the
whole affair as creepy as possible
without crossing the line of
offensive. A meteor has crashed
down to earth and turned fungi,
amongst other things, into
sentient beings. It also seems to
have made much of the local flora
and fauna mad, bad and evil.
This is all pretty standard fare
for the action adventure genre,
but there’s more than enough to
differentiate it from everything
else out there. The art style,
for one, is faintly reminiscent
of Fifties B-movies. It’s got a
reasonably complex telekinesis
mechanic, along the lines of The
Force Unleashed, and much of the
platforming uses one of Pax the
protagonist’s special abilities. So
it’s far from boring, but if you’ve
got a phobia about mushrooms,
this will make your skin crawl.
